DeWalt DW3191 vs. Freud LU79R007
Thinking about a new circular saw blade? Compare the features of the DeWalt DW3191 and Freud LU79R007 and make an informed purchase!
Let’s take a look at these two circular saw blades: the DeWalt DW3191 and the Freud LU79R007.
Features & Benefits
Size
Both products are 7 1/4” in diameter and have a 5/8” arbor hole. The most common circular saws have a 5/8” arbor and accept 7 1/4” blades. This means that both circular saw blades should be widely compatible with many saws. If you’re unsure, check the manual for your saw to verify what blade sizes your circular saw takes.
The DW3191 is 0.045” thick and has a 0.071” (thin) kerf. The LU79R007 is 0.063” thick and has a 0.079” (thin) kerf. (The term “kerf” refers to the width of the cut that the blade makes in the material being cut.)
Teeth
Both saw blades have carbide teeth. The DW3191 has 18 teeth in an ATB configuration. The LU79R007 has 60 teeth in a Hi-ATB configuration.
Alternate top bevel (ATB) teeth are cut on a bevel rather than being flat across. This shape lets them slice through wood rather than tearing out chunks, resulting in cleaner crosscuts. They do tend to be less durable than flat-top teeth. Hi-ATB teeth are beveled at a steeper angle than regular ATB teeth, and do an even better job on materials like plywood and melamine.
Pros & Cons
Let’s take a look at some of the pluses and minuses of these products.
For the DeWalt:
Pros
- Heavy-duty shoulders stand up to nails in wood with no kickback
- 18-tooth count makes for fast demolition and dismantling of wood
Cons
- Leaves rough cuts, not for precision work
For the Freud:
Pros
- Leaves extremely smooth cuts in laminate, melamine, and other chip-prone materials
Cons
- Quite expensive, best saved for jobs where it really excels rather than general-purpose use
